All aboard the StartupBus, a Canadian app for Alzheimer’s patients

Every Monday, CommerceLab brings you a roundup of all the gamification, user experience and interactive display news that’s fit to print. (Or the stuff we liked best, anyway.)

Gamification ranked fifth on The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) top ten list of Workplace Trends for 2014. Chances seem good that game techniques will be used to make your office a more playful place this year.

If escaping the office is more your style, you might want to consider a trip on the StartupBus. The StartupBus is already fueled up (and still accepting applications) for its March 2nd departure. Get on and get hacking for a 72-hour commute/competition from Toronto to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Who knows, you might just hack your way to a better bus-user experience.

More into armchair mobility? You’re not alone. Akamai reports that in 2013, mobile data traffic jumped 80 per cent over the previous year. Canada landed a respectable middle standing in the speed ranking, with an unnamed service provider offering average 5.8 Mbps connection speed and 16.7 Mbps peak (but compare that to a Russian provider that topped the list with a hair-raising 49.8 Mbps peak).

Students at OCAD are in the final testing stages of an iPad app for Alzheimer’s sufferers. The app, called Postcard Memories, aims to provide tangible experiences through skeuomorphic design for memories through a scrapbook-like interface.

Finally, to entertain during breaks from your daily gamification regimen, Vancouver’s UrtheCast (pronounced “Earth Cast”) has successfully deployed two of their UltraHD near-realtime streaming cameras on the Space Station pointed down at you.
